Her body is slim. Who is she? There is no doubt that she is Durga Mahisasuramardini, a Hindu goddess. But the Javanese people have their own story about her. Here is the story. A long long time ago in central Java lived a wise king. His name was Prabu Boko. He had a beautiful daughter whose name was Roro Jonggrang. They lived in a palace on top of a hill. At present we can visit the ruins of the palace that is located about two miles south of Prambanan temple. The palace is called kraton Boko Boko Palace. His country was so prosperous that another king was jealous. There was a neighboring kingdom under king Bandung Bondowoso. One day king Bandung attacked Prabu Boko. In a fierce fight King Boko was killed and his kingdom was conquered. The young Bandung Bondowoso fall in love with Roro Jonggrang when he saw her beauty. He wanted to marry her so he proposed her. But Roro Jonggrang definitely did not want to marry someone who had murdered her father. So she gave a difficult condition. She told Bandung that she would marry him if he could build one thousand temples in one night. Bandung was surprised but he was optimistic he could meet the condition. He was a powerful king and he had many friends among the genie, giants, and ghost spirits. So he asked them for help. With the help of those invisible beings Bandung built the temples. Meanwhile Roro Jonggrang and her people kept an eye on Bandung. When it was almost dawn Bandung and his troops of ghost had built nine hundred ninety nine temples. Roro Jonggrang was very worried. If Bandung could meet her condition, she had to marry him. Then she had a bright idea. She ordered her servant and her people to make noise and lights. Women were ordered to cook and make noise by hitting kitchen utensils. Men were also ordered to make noise around the temples. Then the genies and ghost thought that daylight had come. They were afraid of the sunlight so they left immediately. Without their help Bandung was unable to finish the temple. Bandung was very angry. He knew that it was a dirty trick from Roro Jonggrang. Then he cursed Roro Jonggrang into a statue. Thereis a legend that Javanese people always tell about this temple. Once, a man named Roro Jonggrang Bondowoso love. Because of his love, Jonggrang asked Bondowoso make 1000 temples with statues in one night. The request was nearly fulfilled Jonggrang asked the villagers to pound rice and make a big fire that created an atmosphere like the A long time ago, there lived a very powerful king named Prabu Baka. He was the king of the Prambanan kingdom. All people in the kingdom were afraid of him because he looked like a giant monster. All the people of Prambanan lived peacefully. But then, the Prambanan kingdom was attacked and occupied by the Pengging kingdom. Prambanan then was ruled by Bandung Bondowoso of Pengging kingdom. He was a mean king. He also had great supernatural power. His soldiers were not only humans but also genies. Prambanan Temple The king of Prambanan had a beautiful daughter named Roro Jonggrang. Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. “You’re so beautiful. Would you be my queen?” asked Bandung Bondowoso. Roro Jonggrang was shocked. She didn’t like Bandung Bondowoso because he was a mean person. She wanted to refuse, but she afraid that Bandung Bondowoso would be angry and endangered the people of Prambanan. Then, she came up with a plan. “If you want to marry me, you have to build a thousand temples for me in just one night,” said Roro Jonggrang. “What? That’s impossible!” said Bandung Bondowoso. But he didn’t give up. He consulted with his advisor. “Your Majesty can ask the genies to help built the temples,” said the advisor. So, Bandung Bondowoso summoned his entire genies soldier and commanded them to help him built a thousand temples. The genies worked at unbelievable speed. Meanwhile, Roro Jonggrang heard from her servant that the building of a thousand temples was almost finished, she was so worried. But again, she came up with a great idea. She asked all of her servants to help her. “Please prepare a lot of straw and mortar. Please hurry up!” said Roro Jonggrang. “Burn the straw and make some noise pounding the mortar, quickly.” All those servants did what Roro Jonggrang ordered them there were burning straw and pounding the mortar, to making the genies think that the sun is going to rise. A statue thought to be Princess Roro Jonggrang “It’s already dawn. We have to go now,” said the leader of the genies to Bandung Bondowoso. All the genies immediately stopped their work and ran for cover from the sun, which they afraid of. They didn’t know that the light was from the fire that burning the straw, not from the sun. Bandung Bondowoso can’t stop the genies from leaving. He was angry. He knew Roro Jonggrang had just tricked him. “You cannot fool me, Roro Jonggrang. I already have 999 temples. I just need one more temple. Now, I will make you the one-thousandth temple.” He pointed his finger to Roro Jonggrang and said some spells. Magically, Roro Jonggrang’s body turned into stone. Until now, the temple is still standing in the Prambanan area, Central Java. And the temple is called Roro Jonggrang temple. Legend of Loro Jonggrang A Folklore from Central Java, Indonesia Once upon a time, there was a kingdom named Prambanan. The people lived peacefully. However, soon their happy lives were disturbed by Pengging Kingdom. The king, Bandung Bondowoso, wanted to occupy Prambanan. He was a mean king. The war between Prambanan and Pengging could not be avoided. Prambanan lost the war and led by the new king, Bandung Bondowoso. Pengging could win the war because Bandung Bondongwoso had a supernatural power. His soldiers were not only humans but also genies. Those creatures always obeyed Bandung Bondowoso. They always did whatever Bandung Bondowoso asked them to do. The king of Prambanan had a beautiful daughter. Her name was Loro Jonggrang Rara Jonggrang. Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. "If you want to marry me, you have to build a thousand of temples in just one night," said Loro Jonggrang. She hated Bandung Bondowoso because he made the people of Prambanan suffered. "What? Impossible! You just gave me an excuse for not marrying me!" said Bandung Bondowoso. But he did not give up. He asked the genies to help him. Then all those genies worked hard to build the temples. Meanwhile, Loro Jonggrang heard from the lady-inwaiting that the building of temples was almost finished. She was so scared; she did not want to marry Bandung Bondowoso. And then she had a great idea. She asked all the ladies-inwaiting to help her. "Please prepare a lot of straw and mortar. Come on! Hurry up!" said Loro Jonggrang. All those ladies-in-waiting were confused. They did not know why Loro Jonggrang asked them to prepare a lot of straw and mortars in the middle of the night. "Listen, all those genies are building the temples, right? We have to stop them by burning the straw and make some noise by pounding the mortar. The genies will think that sun is going to rise and they will run away. Genies are afraid of sunlight." It worked! All those genies thought that sun rose. They did not know the light was from the fire that burning the straw. And the noise from pounding the mortar was like the start of a new day. Bandung Bondowoso was angry. He knew Loro Jonggrang just tricked him. "You cannot fool me, Loro Jonggrang. I already have 999 temples. I just need one more temple. Now, I will make you the one-thousandth temple." With his supernatural power, Bandung Bondowoso made Loro Jonggrang a temple. Until now, the temple is still standing in Prambanan area, Central Java. And the temple is named Loro Jonggrang temple. Despite being a giant, the king had a very beautiful daughter named Roro Jonggrang The Slim Girl.The time came when Prabu Baka wanted to expand his territory by conquering the neighboring kingdom, Pengging. The king of Pengging, Prabu Damar Maya, responded and sent his son, Raden Bandung Bandawasa, to defend their Bandung Bandawasa, renowned for his supernatural power, won the war. He managed to kill Prabu Baka. Soon, Baka kingdom fell into the hands of Bandung victory, Bandung Bandawasa entered the palace where Prabu Baka used to live. When he saw Roro Jonggrang, he fell in love. He wanted to marry course, Roro Jonggrang didn't want to marry the man who had killed her beloved father. She refused. However, Bandung Bandawasa persuaded her to marry him. In the end, Roro Jonggrang accepted his marriage proposal with two conditions that seemed impossible to fulfil."I want you to make a well and a thousand temples in just one night. They must be ready before the sun rises tomorrow morning," she demanded. She felt sure that it would be impossible for Bandung Bandawasa to fulfil her requirement and marry Bondowoso agreed. After a few hours, he was able to make a well with his great supernatural power."Done!" he said with satisfaction. "I've finished the well, now the temples. I will ask my genie soldiers and helpers to help me build them."Bandung Bandawasa then summoned genies and ordered them to build one-thousand temples. The genies worked hard and soon, there were able to build nearly 999 that the job was almost completed, Roro Jonggrang panicked. “Marrying Bandung Bondowoso is the last thing I want to do in my life. I have to make him fail one way or another,” she she had a great idea. She gathered all her servants and village girls and asked them to help her. "Listen, the genies are building the temples and it's unfair! We have to collect a lot of straw. Come on! Prince Bandung Bondowoso is mesmerized by the beauty of the mourning princess and propose marriage, but his offer is swiftly rejected. Bandung Bondowoso insists on the union, and finally Rara Jonggrang agrees on two impossible conditions first the prince must build a well named Jalatunda, and second, he must construct a thousand temples in only one lovestruck prince agrees, and immediately starts work on the well. Using his supernatural powers once again, the prince swiftly finishes construction and proudly displays his work for the princess. As a trick, she urges him to enter the well and when he does so, Patih Gupolo piles stones into it and buries him alive. With great effort Bandung Bondowoso escapes, but his love for the princess is so strong that he forgives her the attempt on his fulfill the second condition, the prince enters into meditation and conjures up a multitude of demon spirits from the earth. With their help he builds the first 999 temples and starts work on the final one. To thwart his efforts the princess and her maids light a fire in the east and begin pounding rice, a traditional dawn activity. Fooled into thinking the sun is about to rise, the spirits flee back into the earth leaving the last temple prince is furious when he learns of this deception, and places a curse on Rara Jonggrang which turns her into a stone statue.
